About the River Birchall Foundation

The River Birchall Foundation is a grassroots nonprofit based in Santa Cruz, California, dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of River Birchall by creating opportunities for young people in skateboarding, music, art, and community connection. Through scholarships, youth leadership programs, and community events, we empower young people of all ages to explore their passions, build confidence, and find belonging in positive, creative spaces. Every donation directly funds scholarships for skate camps and enrichment programs, supports youth-led initiatives, and helps bring our community together through events like our annual Skate Jam at legendary Bill's Wheels Skate Shop in Santa Cruz, California, home to River's mural.

Key Impact of Donations:

  1. Fund scholarships for kids to attend skate camps and enrichment programs
  2. Support youth leadership through our Junior Board
  3. Create family-friendly, all-ages community events like the annual Skate Jam, bringing  together local legends, amateurs, and pros to promote creativity and wellness
  4. Spark creativity and connection through art, music, and skateboarding

Artist Bio:

Meet Lucas Addleman,

A meticulous artist from Petaluma, CA.

Luc repurposes beat-up, unwanted, and unplayable vinyls, upcycling old records into something new and unique.

Luc began painting vinyl in late 2023, after buying a couple of big vinyl collections. After sorting through them, he was left with about 20 records that were in very bad condition. Some were super-scratched up and warped, others had gnarly amounts of surface noise that would be harsh on the ears when played. But, he still didn’t have the heart to throw them out.

He felt that if they were bound for the trash can anyway, “I might as well paint one! What’s the worst that could happen, right?!?” Within minutes of beginning his first piece, he was hooked. Smiling, laughing and having a great time, “The LP Project” was born!

Luc’s process starts by choosing a song, putting it on repeat, and allowing the energy of that song to inspire the color scheme and the overall painting process.

Artist’s Statement:

Being creative has always been therapeutic to me. Whether I’m making music, painting, cooking, or capturing photographs, I feel the most centered and like myself during these activities. It’s so important to express ourselves from the deepest, most authentic points of our soul.

I’m a classic overthinker, so being focused on an activity where I can be present in the moment really takes me out of my head. Everything else melts away when I paint. Often times what I’m able to communicate in my work conveys a message much clearer than what I could have conveyed with words. I love being able to further connect painting and music within the world of art. It’s such a special connection that runs deeply into our culture and history as human beings.
